Author of The Seductive Art of Japanese Bondage and Wild Side Sex, educator and columnist on adventurous sexuality, Midori has traveled the world presenting to universities, groups and media. Midori is known for her humanistic, humorous and warm classes that help people to spice up people's sex lives and encourage self discovery and personal growth.
Her weekend intensives called 'Women's Sensual Dominance Weekend Intensive' and 'Rope Bondage Dojo (TM)' have been sell-out hits for years. Born in Japan and raised in a feminist intellectual Tokyo household, she served in the US Army while earning her psychology degree from University of California, Berkeley. Numerous years as a sex educator with San Francisco Sex Information combined with her curiosity and explorations into the sex-positivity movement complete the dynamic blend of experiences that give her such breadth and depth of knowledge in human erotic expression.
If you've never attended one of Midori's workshops, this is a great opportunity to broaden your sexual and social horizons in an entertaining and engaging environment. From Aural Sex to Hands-On Rope Bondage, Midori's workshops are open to people of all genders, sexualities, and orientations and you are welcome to attend solo or with a partner or group! Our collective identity since 1997 has been inextricably linked to Nirvana – what a time and place to be alive, and opening a sex shop, eh? While we’re unsure of how into Nirvana our founding members were (time contorts all stories, as we all well know!), or if they were more into being a thorn in the side of religious organizing, we sure know that all of our work ringtones feature riffs from the iconic song. And, when we stumbled across this tote that tips it’s hat to both Nirvana and queer punk band Pansy Division by Toronto-based Mary Tremonte, we knew it had to become one of us. Since, really, our whole co-op smells like queer spirit. Hand drawn and silkscreened in Toronto, 100% cotton. Get your hands on a Smells like Queer Spirit tote!

If you've been following the negotiations between Canada Post and their workers, you'll know that people's reactions to union negotiations is all over the place. It seems half of the country resents unionized workers because unionized workers have better wages and pensions than the general public, and the other half of us think that all workers should have the same sorts of wages, benefits, and pensions that unionized workers get. Over the past twenty years our co-op has consciously (perhaps subconsciously) tried to be as publicly apolitical as possible outside of the arena of sexual rights, pleasure, health, and education. As we understand it, the rationale for this decision was about ensuring that our shop would be open and accessible to all people who want to make their sexual world a better place regardless of their particular political stripes. Whether you're conservative, liberal, NDP, marxist-leninist, anarchist, or libertarian, we believe that you have the right to your sexuality whatever it may be - as long as it is based in active and enthusiastic consent. We will always believe this and we will always support your right to actualize your sexual self no matter who you are or what you believe in.
Between the horror in Orlando and Toronto's overwhelmingly racist response to the Black Lives Matter protest at Pride (not to mention the deaths of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling at the hands of police, and the shootings in Dallas which all happened in the time it took to put together this newsletter), we are finding it harder and harder to bury our sadness and anger for the sake of the larger project of sexual liberation for all. Further, as people who try to have an intersectional approach to life, and as people who have ourselves long felt alienated by Pride Toronto, we're having a lot of feelings about these past couple of weeks and about Black Lives Matter generally. In an era where the mainstream media absolutely dominates our discource about sex, lube has been the biggest loser. Between the minor social media celebrities bragging that they "don't need lube", and our collective lack of understanding of arousal nonconcordance, there are few sexual topics more misunderstood and underestimated than lube. The happy reality is that lube is amazing and makes all kinds of sex so much better than it would be otherwise. Regardless of your gender, orientation, or sexuality, a great lube literally decreases friction in your relationships and turns a solo session into a super session with a couple of well-placed drops. However, the key is to find a lube that works for you, because a lube that causes an allergic reaction or one that causes your condom to break (we're looking at you coconut oil!) is not going to make sex more pleasurable. Want to learn How to Choose a Lubricant?

Finally! A feminist romance novel that's as smokin' hot as it is super smart - and from one of our fave sex educators to boot! Data, research, scientific formulae--Annabelle Coffey is completely at ease with all of them. Men, not so much. But that's all going to change after she asks Dr. Charles Douglas, the postdoctoral fellow in her lab, to have sex with her. Charles is not only beautiful, he is also adorably awkward, British, brilliant, and nice. What are the odds he'd turn her down? Higher than the odds you'll be able to put this book down once you pick it up. Seriously. Read more about How Not To Fall by Emily Foster

We've quested for years for a reliable stand-to-pee device that can be worn safely and securely for urinating while standing up, and we think we've found the golden ticket with Form Function's STPs! Many STP devices we've looked at over the years do not fit differently-shaped bodies well, or don't have a reservoir that is deep enough for funneling pee safely through the prosthetic (read: backsplash). Form Function's handmade products feature a flexible but sturdy design, and have impressed us with their user-friendliness. That being said, we would still strongly suggest practicing peeing with a STP before using outside of safer spaces, since having an unruly prosthetic can be a severe safety issue. Vibrators don't come with instruction manuals. You might think it's funny that we even mention it, but many of our customers have never used a vibrator, and just as many are uncomfortable or unfamiliar with the subtleties of self-love. So it's no surprise to us that people ask, and we'd like to help out a bit with some basics on how to use a vibrator. Spoiler alert: the image above is probably not how you want to use a vibrator. Designed with love in Ontario, and machine made with integrity in the USA, the Fuze Foreman is yet another high-quality offering from the fine folks at Fuze. This is Fuze's first uncircumcised piece, and we're delighted with the quality of the design! Built from a model, the Foreman, features beautiful detailing we haven’t seen yet when it comes to an ergonomic and uncircumcised realistic toy. The Foreman also features Fuze’s signature textured base (great for providing sensation for the wearer during harness play!), plus space for a One Touch Bullet. Fuze is among the most environmentally responsible companies we’ve crossed paths with, working toward carbon neutrality, and currently funnels a large portion of their profits towards subsidizing their contributions to the local wetlands ecology they’re based in. We've never had a motto or a slogan - although we distinctly recall a brainstorming session where the best motto suggestion was "the sex shop for the rest of us" which was obviously already spoken for by both Apple and Festivus. Perhaps we've just never been all that into marketing (true), or perhaps our name says it all (also true), but more than anything else, we've never been good at boiling a complex concept down into a short sentence... until now. Join us for this stroll down memory lane! As much as we're happy to be off Queen Street West, we'll never stop missing our beautiful shop. Unlike our falling-apart digs at "The 701", our space at 493 was the actualization of fourteen years of daydreaming about the potential of our little co-op. Sure, 493 was never as hip as 701 Queen West was - Peaches and Feist never lived upstairs - but it was a sweet little shop nonetheless.
We feel a special kinship to Fun Factory as they were founded in 1996, a year before Come As You Are opened its doors - and as such, we carry one of the biggest selections of Fun Factory in Canada! And we’ve been thrilled to see them grow as we have. Fun Factory was one of the first of the new generation of sex toy makers. They believed sexuality was something to celebrate, and sex toys shouldn’t be hidden or shameful. Far from it, Fun Factory designed and produced toys that were bold, bright, and beautiful. They also began with a commitment to producing affordable but high quality sex toys that would be phthalate-free, and never wavered in that committment. Take a stroll down memory lane with 20 Years of Fun Factory
You know, everyone and their mother has a 'great idea' for a sex toy (thanks, mom!) but it is truly unique when folks are able to actualize one of those great ideas! This brand-new, hand-made in Canada silicone toy might take a little imagination to get your, uh, head around, so we'll give you a couple of hints. Designed to be worn during penetrative play, the Sili Saddle provides a protective barrier and some sweet vulva stimulation to boot - but wait, there's more! The silicone back of this toy stays perfectly when placed against the bottom of a flared-base dildo so that you can go to town during harness play, get some nice grinding action for your own pleasure, and a little padding for when that dildo kick-back gets too intense. The Stimulating Sili Saddle

As adults who talk to other adults about sex every single day, we find that so much of the sex negativity we encounter - and that we all experience in one form or another - can be traced back to the insufficient, awkward, or downright misleading information we received about sexuality when we were young. We also talk to a lot of parents in our shop and we cannot tell you how impressed we are with how active and interested and responsible so many of you are trying to be with your kids around their sex education.Read more about The Sex is a Funny Word
