how to use a condom

If you use condoms consistently and correctly they can be up to 98% effective in preventing sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Here are the steps involved in proper use and removal of a condom

  1. In Canada all condoms will have a lot number and expiration date stamped onto the individual condom package (not just the box). Check the expiration date on the condom. If the expiration date has passed, or there is no expiration date, do not use the condom.
  2. Carefully open the package. Watch out for your teeth, sharp nails, or anything you might have on your hands that could damage the condom.
  3. You have to make sure you are rolling the condom on the penis the right way. Most condoms only roll on the penis one way. Make sure the reservoir tip (the pointy hat part) is pointing out and away from the tip of the penis.
  4. If you are uncircumcised (or putting a condom on someone who is) , pull back your foreskin.
  5. Put the tip of the rolled up condom on the tip of the penis. As you do this you should notice the reservoir tip is sticking up and has air in it. Gently pinch the air out of the tip of the condom. Doing this reduces the chance that the condom will break or pop off when you ejaculate.
  6. If you have two hands you can use, hold the condom at the head of your penis with one hand and use the other to roll the condom down the shaft. Be sure the condom is rolled all the way to the base of the penis.
  7. To increase sensitivity, you can put a drop or two of lubricant in the condom tip before you put it on. Be careful not to use too much as this could make the condom slide off more easily during sex.
  8. When you're finished having sex, hold on to the base of the condom as the penis is pulled out to make sure it doesn't slip off.
  9. Please dispose of the condom in a considerate way. Don't flush it down the toilet, and if you tie a knot in the condom it won't create extra mess for whoever may be taking out the garbage later. Of course if you're the one who takes out the garbage, be as messy as you want to be.
