how to choose an anal dildo

Choosing an anal dildo isn't that different than choosing a regular dildo, except you need to make sure the dildo you choose is safe for anal use. For a dildo to be a safe anal dildo, it should:

  • have a flared base wide enough that it can't slip all the way into the rectum
  • be smooth and free of rough or sharp edges

As long as your dildo fits those qualifications, the rest of the considerations are personal. Here are some tips on choosing an anal dildo.

Size and Shape

In terms of anal dildo size, don't worry too much about getting something that's too long (you don't have to insert the whole thing!), but you want to make sure the width is right for you. It's better to start smaller and work your way up. Something that's too small can still be fun (in fact you can do more with it) but something that's too big ends up collecting dust under your bed (or, in the case of one exhibitionist customer of ours, propping up a window sill in the summer). If you think you want to use your dildo in a harness, its better to get something longer than you want as this gives you more room to play with.

In terms of shape, you can get anal dildos that look like a penis, ones that don't look like anything, ones that are curved and have ridges on them. If you want a dildo that you can use for enthusiastic penetration you might be better off without a lot of ridges or extreme curves, but a gentle curve is nice as it mirrors the natural curve in the body.

Anal Dildo Materials

Anal dildos are available in a variety of materials, each with their own pros and cons. Silicone dildos are our first choice for quality, variation in shape, size, and colour, and ease of cleaning. Jelly rubber dildos are inexpensive and can be great beginner toys, as long as you use a condom on your toy. We also carry anal dildos made of metal and glass, which are fabulous but require extra care (we like to think of them as 'special occasion' sex toys).

Harness Compatibility

Because anal dildos need to have a wide flared base to be used safely, most of them are harness compatible. Beyond this, if you think you might want to use your anal dildo in a strap on harness, choose something a bit longer than you need, and a toy that is relatively firm. Avoid metal or glass, but a firmer rubber or silicone is recommended as this gives the harness wearer more control.
