Spread Some Holiday Cheer!

The winter is creeping up upon us again.  It feels like we live every summer in perfect denial of the seasons ahead, and when the snow hits, we seem surprised when we’re driven apart and inside by the cold and the bad weather. Those of us who don’t spend all year awaiting ski-season annually lament the freezing temperatures and the inevitable ‘soaker’ that results from just one misstep from the curb. At least in this part of the country, we have slush. We can only imagine how hard tundra must be to bear.

There is a particular sort of body language that accompanies the cold and none of it is good – we shiver and cross our arms to maintain body heat, which is of course also what we do when we feel vulnerable or defensive and we naturally use our bodies to close ourselves off from the world.  

The bitterly cold irony is that the best way to get warm and keep warm is to open ourselves up and take some advice from our winter sports and survivalist friends. What’s the best thing to do when you’re lost in the forest in the middle of winter? Take your clothes off and bury yourself in the snow and share your heat with another cold and naked person. Sadly, our instinct is to keep ourselves as sheltered as possible and to keep our warmth for ourselves. The reality is that in order to get warm, you have to take a risk and share what little warmth you have with someone else. In return, they’ll share theirs, and together be able to create a heat greater than what could have produced on your own.

In that spirit, we’d like to invite all of you to take a risk and share a little holiday heat with the people you like and love.
